Smith, Vernon Hills roll at Mundelein

Vernon Hills senior Sydney Smith outscored Hoffman Estates’ entire girls basketball team Monday.

The Vermont-bound forward had 27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals, as the Cougars defeated the Hawks 54-20 Monday morning in the opening game of the Mundelein Mustang Holiday Classic.

Becky Bahlmann added 9 points and 3 rebounds for Vernon Hills (10-3), which plays Prairie Ridge at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Also for the Cougars, Danielle Comitor and Dana Meline grabbed 8 and 6 rebounds, respectively.

Grayslake Central 51, Wheeling 48: Grayslake Central got 16 points from Morgan Dahlstrom and 10 more from Maddy Arnold as the Rams stayed unbeaten in tourney play with a 51-48 win over Wheeling at Warren. The Wildcats got a big game from Deanna Kuzmanic. She had 26 points and 8 rebounds.

Wheeling out-scored the Rams 15-7 in the fourth quarter but couldn’t quite catch the Rams (10-3).

Palatine 44, Deerfield 42. The Pirates had a combined 30 points from Morgan Radtke (17) and Erin Meyer (13) and came from behind to stop Deerfield in tournament play at Warren.

Palatine won the fourth quarter 17-8. Morgan Gallagher (7 points) and Carissa Multon (4 points, 9 rebounds) also helped out the Pirates.

Deerfield had strong games from Haley Greer (13 points and 8 rebounds), Kathryn Hoffmann (12 points, 5 rebounds) and Emilia Karkazis (7 points, 10 rebounds).
