Wheeling starts with tourney win
Junior guard Deanna Kuzmanic scored a game-high 17 points and classmate Hannah Dobrowski added 12 as Wheeling’s girls basketball team kicked off play in the Warren tournament with a 45-42 victory over Carmel.
The Wildcats improved to 6-6 overall.
Grayslake Central 48, Palatine 40: Seniors Sami Heuertz (10 points) and Morgan Radtke (8) were top scorers for Palatine (4-8) in the first round game of the Warren tournament.
Heuertz, Kirsten Allen and Morgan Gallagher each had a 3-pointer for the Pirates.
Hoffman Estates 49, Jacobs 38: Hoffman Estates freshman guard Monraia Wilson enjoyed the finest game of her young career, scoring a career-high 25 points with 9 rebounds, 8 steals and 2 assists.
Wilson made 11-of-15 free throws.
“She had a super night,” said Hawks coach Mike Nocella who watched his team get its first win of the season. “It was a nice game for us. The kids came back well after the night before (60-29 loss to Conant).”
Erin Hanson added 9 points with 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists while Mary Saitta had 9 points with a pair of 3-pointers and 5 rebounds.
