North Chicago stops Vernon Hills

Zyaire Strowder-Butler and Tinee’sha Coleman each scored 16 points, and North Chicago’s girls basketball team ended Vernon Hills’ North Suburban Conference Prairie Division winning streak at 31 games, edging the visiting Cougars 52-50 in overtime Tuesday night.

After erasing a 38-33 deficit after three quarters to force OT, North Chicago (4-6, 3-1) outscored Vernon Hills 3-1 in the extra session. Kylah Collins (13 points) scored all of the Warhawks’ points on 3 free throws.

Sydney Smith had 24 points, including four 3-pointers, and 9 rebounds for Vernon Hills (7-1, 2-1). Smith’s four 3s and 14 points helped the Cougars take an 18-17 lead into the second quarter. Vernon Hills led 29-23 at halftime.

Mia Polisky added 8 points for the Cougars. Kasey Firnbach had 7 points and 9 rebounds.

Libertyville 31, Lake Zurich 25: Junior Becky Deichl led the Wildcats with a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats limited the Bears to 2 points after the first quarter and 7 first-half points.

“I was pleased with our defensive effort in the first half,” said coach Greg Pedersen, whose Wildcats improved to 3-6 and 2-1 in the North Suburban Lake Division. “It set the tone for us.”

Abby Pirron and Kaylee Grant scored 9 and 6 points, respectively, for Lake Zurich.

Antioch 51, Wauconda 31: Paige Gallimore scored a game-high 23 points, and Maddie Murrillo scored her first bucket as a varsity player, as the visiting Sequoits improved to 8-3 and 2-1 in the North Suburban Prairie.

The Sequoits outrebounded their opponent for the 11th consecutive game, led by Alexis Duehr, who grabbed 11 boards. Sage Keyes came off the bench to provide a defensive spark and picked up 3 steals for Antioch.

Wauconda (2-3, 1-1) received 9 points from Lauren Nee and 7 from Paige Motley.

Lakes 49, Round Lake 25: Ellie Haviland scored 13 points, Kelsey Kohler added 10, and the Eagles earned their first win of the season.

“It has been a rough start with playing some very good (Class) 4A teams, so getting a win helps,” Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. “(Coach) Howard Conkling does a nice job with the kids from Round Lake. His kids play hard and don’t let you coast.”

Lakes improved to 1-8 and 1-2 in the North Suburban Prairie.

“Hopefully this win gives the kids some confidence and something to build on,” said Schneider, who credited Sam Ney and Gabby Blanco for their defense. “Of course, as coaches, often we are never satisfied and we definitely can learn some things from this game. But now the ladies will sleep well, and I am happy for them.”

Round Lake was led by Justice Clarke and Kelly Birch with 6 points each.

Grayslake Central 54, Johnsburg 30: Morgan Dahlstrom scored 8 of her game-high 16 points in the opening quarter, as the host Rams won their third straight, all in Fox Valley Fox Division play.

Grayslake Central (7-2, 3-0) also received a season-high 12 points from Quin Garbett, who sank three 3-pointers. Lauren Spalding hit a pair of 3s for the Rams.

Barrington 59, Grayslake North 52: Brooke Gunderson scored 14 points for the visiting Fillies, who improved to 8-1 with the nonconference win.

Grayslake North (4-4), which dropped its second in a row, was led by Kendall Detweiler’s 24 points. The senior guard hit one 3-pointer and went 11 of 12 from the foul line. Freshman Sidney Lovitsch added a season-high 14 points for the Knights.

Mundelein 66, Lake Forest 41: The host Mustangs improved to 5-2 and 2-0 in the North Suburban Lake.
