Melendez leads Elk Grove win

Joell Melendez canned three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points to help Elk Grove to its first win of the season with a 72-59 decision over Proviso West in tournament play at Fenton on Tuesday.

Tyler Ingebrigtsen added 13 points and Scott Furlong had 11 for Elk Grove (1-1), which led 52-34 after three quarters.

Khalill Walker led Proviso West with 15 points and Tivonte Allen scored 11.

“We came out and played better defense and I think that set the tone for us,” said Elk Grove coach Anthony Furman.

Maine West 84, Lincoln Park 79: Matt Acevedo led the host Warriors with 21 points and Joel Ferraren had 20 as Maine West survived a wild one to get coach John Bongiorno his first win with the program.

The Warriors had a blistering start, scoring 24 points in both of the first two quarters to take a 48-37 at the half.

But Lincoln Park turned the tables on Maine West, producing a 29-point third quarter. The Warriors trailed by 3 points at one point before outscoring their foes 17-13 in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Anthony Dones shot 5-for-6 from the foul line down the stretch and finished 11-for-13 at the line on his way to 19 points for Maine West (1-1).

Niles West 93, Hersey 88: Even a 34-point fourth quarter wasn’t quite enough for Hersey, which rallied against host Niles West before coming up short 93-88 in tournament play Tuesday.

In a game that included 66 free throws, there was plenty of scoring.

Junior Brandon Hatten led the way for Hersey with 24 points. Payton Haas made three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, and Alex Mueller had with 13.

Jose Rios paced Niles West with 21, Evan Hines had 20 and Romeo Magloire had 19.

Lake Forest Academy 58, Barrington 55 (OT): At Mundelein, Brandon Amoroso sank 5-of-6 free throws in the final 45 seconds of overtime, as the Caxys prevailed. Dejon Brissett led LFA with a game-high 19 points. Daniel Joseph added 16 and Isaiah Faust had 12.

Barrington received 15 points from Chris Lester, 12 from Rapolas Ivanauskas, 10 from Austin Madrzyk and 9 from Zach Bart.

Conant 55, Walther Christian 36: The Cougars picked up their first win in tournament play at St. Viator.

D’Angelo McBride led the way in scoring for Conant (1-1) with 17 points, and Joe Ranallo had 15.

Walther Christian was led by Lee Hardrick with 15 points.

Wheeling 50, Westmont 49: The Wildcats got their first victory as Jeremy Stephani scored a game-high 23 points with three 3-pointers in tournament play at Ridgewood.

Grayslake Central 82, Christian Liberty 27: The Rams earned their first win of the year by denying Christian Liberty in the Chargers’ first game of the season in tournament play at Buffalo Grove.

Guard Sam Ruhlmann scored a game-high 16 points to help lead the way for Grayslake Central (1-1).

Aaron Cunningham led Christian Liberty with 9 points.
