Scouting Bartlett Hawks

Bartlett Hawks

Last year: 15-13 (7-4 UEC Valley)

Coach: Denise Sarna (16th year, 276-168 at Bartlett; 298-276 overall)

Top returnees: Seniors Ashley Johnson (5-3 G), Elizabeth Arco (6-1 F/C), Ally Giampapa (5-9 G); sophomores Nicole Gerdevich (5-10 F), Nina Pavell (5-3 G), Kaitlin Brohan (5-9 G/F), Kelly Harris (6-1 F/C).

Top newcomers: Juniors Lauren Janczak (5-6 G), Erin Rose (5-7 G), Chelsea Lenart (5-4 G), Shelley Lyjak (5-7 G).

Outlook: The Hawks come into the season not only with a young team but with some injury concerns. Brohan (4.1 ppg) has been out with an ankle injury and Giampapa (9.0 ppg) has had to sit out with a concussion. With only three seniors on the squad, Bartlett’s progression may be a work in progress. Arco (7.8 ppg, 7.1 rpg) brings the most experience back, but Johnson, Gerdevich and Harris all saw extensive varsity action last year, as did Pavell at the end of the season. “We’re starting off with a lot of question marks,” said Sarna, now just two wins from 300 for her career. “We’ve got a smaller group this year. We have a lot of young kids and that’s the big question — they’ll have to step up. It’s a good group that’s capable but they haven’t matured yet. We’ve got some versatility and with Liz and Kelly we have some size, and we’ve got a good amount of speed. Liz has experience and Ally had a good summer so their experience will have to shine through. We have set specific team/game goals and if we are able to achieve them this team will be successful. We hope to be a strong defensive team and operate at a controlled but fast pace offensively.”
