Scouting South Elgin Storm

South Elgin Storm

Last year: 17-12 (6-6 UEC Valley)

Coach: Tim Prendergast (7th year, 91-79)

Top returnees: Seniors Savanah Uveges (5-8 G), Anna Tracy (5-6 G), Kennede Miller (6-1 C); juniors Delaney Kelleher (5-10 G), Laura McIntosh (5-8 G), Cara Fahey (5-7 G); sophomore Nadia Yang (5-6 G).

Top newcomers: Junior Taylor Ford (5-8 G); sophomore Bridgette Williams (5-10 F); freshman Mackie Kelleher (6-0 C).

Outlook: This could be South Elgin’s best team yet under Prendergast. With the return of a healthy Uveges (9.3 ppg, 5.7 rpg., 2.7 apg, 3.2 spg) and Miller (8.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, honorable mention all-area), both four-year starters, as well as Tracy (6.6 ppg), a 3-year starter, the experience is there. Delany Kelleher, McIntosh and Fahey all have a full varsity season under their belts and midseason call-up Yang (6.0 ppg) is drawing rave reviews from Prendergast, whose team was 19-1 in the summer including wins over Huntley and Burlington Central. Last season, the Storm was 10-10 until Uveges, who will play soccer on scholarship at Nebraska, returned from an ACL injury. They went 7-2 with her back. The addition of Mackie Kelleher and Williams give the Storm some size to go with Miller as well. “This could be a really good team,” Prendergast said. “We’ve got a lot of experience and we’re really athletic. We’ve got some really strong guards for the offense we run. We need to stay healthy, but this could be a really good team, maybe the best since I’ve been here.” The Storm also toughened up the schedule with the addition of the ultra-strong Montini Christmas tournament. “We could possibly be 6-1 or 7-0 and be the 15th seed at Montini,” Prendergast said. “That tournament is just loaded.”
