Girls basketball/Fox Valley roundup

An 0-11 start to the season last year became a distant memory for the Jacobs girls basketball team Tuesday night.

Jessica Powell and Jenn Barnec each scored 13 points and freshman Carly Sidor had 12 as the Golden Eagles defeated Woodstock 49-39 in a Fox Valley Conference crossover to open the season.

Jacobs fell behind 18-5 after one quarter but closed the gap to a 26-24 deficit by halftime and then outscored the Blue Streaks 25-13 in the second half.

Westminster Christian 65, Plano 46: The Warriors made it 2-0 at the Somonauk tournament behind 17 points, 4 assists and 2 steals from McKaila Hays. Claire Speweik added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals in the win, while Maddie Versluys had 12 points.

Harvest Christian 57, Kirkland Hiawatha 28: Sydney Doby scored 27 points and had 14 rebounds to lead the Lions to a Northeastern Athletic Conference win in their season opener. Morgan Lockwood added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Kylee Knox had 10 points 6 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Rachel Oostdyk had 7 rebounds.

“It was a great team win for us and fun to start the year with a win,” said Harvest coach Kelly Friestad. “Sydney and Rachel did a great in the post getting position and finishing around the basket. Morgan did a great job of running the lanes in transition and scoring and Kylee had great transition passing.”

CL South 66, Johnsburg 52: Sophomore Chanel Fanter had 20 points and Sara Mickow added 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Gators to a season-opening win in this Fox Valley Conference crossover. Rachel Rasmussen had 14 points and Gaby DeJesus added 10 for Crystal Lake South. Hailee Massie pulled down 6 rebounds.
