Elgin’s Williams signs with Barry

Elgin boys basketball standout Arie Williams finalized his college plans Wednesday morning when the point guard signed with Division II Barry University during a campus visit to Miami Shores, Fla.

The signing concluded a tumultuous college search for Williams, who originally gave a verbal commitment to Division II Tampa University on March 29.

Tampa, which competes in the same Sunshine State Conference as Barry, rescinded its offer to Williams one day before the signing period opened in mid April. That left Williams, who had since passed on other opportunities, scrambling to find a college destination. That scramble ended with Wednesday’s signing.

“I’m real happy that I’ve settled down and finally found a home at Barry University in Miami Shores,” Williams said. “It was just a great experience.

“I’ll have a good opportunity to compete for playing time. They have another good point guard who I can learn a lot from, and I think we could be a good 1-2 combo.

“I think the whole thing with Tampa was just a blessing in disguise.”

Williams, the honorary captain of the 2012-13 Daily Herald All-Area basketball team in the Fox Valley, led the area in scoring last season with 622 points (22.2 ppg) in addition to 121 assists, 69 steals and 97 rebounds. A four-year varsity player. His 1,321 career points rank fourth in Elgin history.
