Schaffeld Rappe to join IBCA Hall of Fame
On April 27 at Illinois State’s Braden Auditorium in Normal, Daryl Schaffeld Rappe will be going into the hall of fame.
If you were wondering which sport, I can’t blame you.
The answer is the Illinois Basketball Coaches Assocation.
But Rappe was one of the most versatile and gifted athletes to play multiple Illinois high school sports; she had already mastered three sports going into her final semester at Fremd High School,
And incredibly, she then added a fourth to her resume.
After already being named the school’s MVP in basketball, volleyball and soccer, Rappe put on a softball uniform for the first time in the spring of 1996.
What happens?
One spring, she did what no other Fremd player had done the past 20-plus seasons on the diamond. Shaffeld set nine school records, including a single-season school batting average of .570 and slugging percentage of .872.
But basketball was the sport Rappe chose to play in college, becoming one of Milwaukee-Wisconsin’s all-time leading scorers with 1,310 points.
Rappe, incidentally played for a hall of fame coach at Fremd.
Vikings coach Carol Plodzien watched Rappe score 1,523 points at Fremd as a four-time all-area guard who also scored a career-high 35 points.
“Daryl’s level of play influenced her opponents and forced them to do things they did not want to do,” said Plodzien, now an assistant coach in the St. Viator girls basketball program. “When Daryl competed, she elected to overachieve. Her positive attitude not only determined her own performance, but lifted those around. The real reward for Daryl was self-respect and long term success.”
Rappe’s amazing softball campaign gave her 12 varsity letters.
“A lot of people say they want to be the best,” Plodzien said. “As I think about Daryl, I can say she was one of the best players to come through our program. How did this happen?
“Partly because she had great support from her parents, and mostly because of Daryl’s goal to simply outwork everyone. That strong work ethic combined with her ability to lead, gave our team direction and motivated others to improve.”
Schaffeld was a first team IBCA all-stater her senior year and was the MVP of the IBCA All-star game that year.
“For me, it was fun coaching Daryl and watching her develop into a Division 1 player,” Plodzien said. “With pride, I can say she is one of the best.”

Anzelmo commits
Quarterback Nick Anzelmo, a two-year starter for Schaumburg High School, has committed to Carthage College in Kenosha where he will continue his football career.
Anzelmo helped lead the Saxons to an 8-3 record last fall and was a three-year letter winner in football.
Women’s softball
Sophomore Andrea DiPrima (Buffalo Grove) is the leading hitter for Northwestern’s softball team with a .353 batting average. The former four-time all-area player for Buffalo Grove has 24 hits in 68 at-bats for the 15-13 Wildcats.
타 Michigan State freshman Dani Goranson (Elk Grove) sits at 11th in the Big Ten with a 2.58 ERA. The former four-time all-area selection was the 2011 Cook County Daily Herald all-area honorary captain.
Women’s swimming
Eastern Michigan’s Kelly Hendricks (Conant) posted a 356.05 in the three-meter dive at the 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving championships.
Hendrick’s score earned her third place overall in the national championships. She put up a 360.30 in the prelims which was good for second in the round.
Men’s lacrosse
Augustana sophomore Evan Chikeles (Hoffman Estates) had a goal in the fourth quarter as the Vikings (3-3) topped visiting Calvin 20-0 to set a program record for goals in a game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jon Pape (Hoffman Estates) recorded 2 saves in the contest.
Voris makes UAA list
타 Former Barrington standout pitcher Claire Voris, who pitched at Washington University (St. Louis) from 2008 to 2011, earned a spot on the University Athletic All-Association’s 25-year softball team in honor of the league’s silver anniversary.
The team consists of each student-athlete who was named Most Valuable Player or accumulated 5 or more points with two points awarded for All-Association first-team recognition, and 1 point for second-team honors in her career.
Voris was the Daily Herald all-area honorary captain in 2007, the year she compiled a 36-3 record and lost 1-0 in the Class AA state championship game to Normal Community in East Peoria.
Local All-stars
The fourth annual Lake County Senior Shootout High School All Star Basketball Game on Friday will include five players from the Mid-Suburban League.
In the girls game, which begins at 6 p.m., Alexa Resch (Barrington), Bailey North (Buffalo Grove) and Amanda Salzman (Buffalo Grove) will play for the East team.
Luke Potnick (Buffalo Grove) will play for the West team and Brad Zaumseil (Barrington) for the East in the boys game which is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Admission is $5 and the games will be held at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
Men’s golf
Illinois Wesleyan sophomore Kenny Wienckowski (St. Viator)shot a 72-69 and tied for the individual championship as the Titans (5-over par 573) won the Fighting Scot Invitational by 21 strokes over St. Francis (Joliet) at Monmouth’s Gibson Woods Golf Course.
Wienckowski and his teammate Gabe Aprati (71-70) were 1-under par with scores of 141 on the par 71, 6,239-yard course.
타 University of San Diego junior Joe Carlson (St. Viator) finished in a tie for 41st with a score of 224 (75-74-75) as the Toreros finished 11th at the 2013 Oregon Duck Invitational.
Trivia answer
Daria Schaffeld, a social science teacher at Prospect High School, was the winning pitcher for Fremd in 1991 when it won its first softball regional title in 13 years. Back then, it took three wins to claim a regional crown. The 1991 title started a streak of 15 regional titles in 21 seasons for the Vikings.
