Vossel-Ginder gets her due from IBCA Hall of Fame
Hersey’s girls basketball team has won two sectional championships in school history.
Although they were 16 years apart, Corinne Vossel-Ginder gets an assist in both — one on the court and one off.
In less than a month, the former Hersey all-state standout will be honored for her work on the court from 1990 to 1994.
Ginder is being inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on April 27 at the Braden Auditorium on Illinois State’s campus in Normal.
In 1994, while becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer at the time, Ginder helped lead the Huskies to their first sectional title as one of the state’s top forwards that season. Her team fell in the supersectional to Downers Grove South.
Off the court, Ginder had a hand in the Huskies’ 2010 sectional title.
Prior to the state tourney that year, Ginder spoke about her experience in 1994, missing a chance to play in the state final by one game.
“I knew my girls that season were something special,” said Hersey current coach Mary Fendley, whose Huskies wound up fourth in the 2010 Class 4A state finals. “I didn’t want to see them come up one game short of getting downstate so I asked her (Vossel) to come in and talk to the girls about what it meant to be part of Hersey girls basketball.
“I thought she had a big impact on our girls. Even though it was 16 years ago, you could see how much it meant to Corinne and how focused the kids were listening to her.”
With 1,527 points, Ginder left as Hersey’s all-time leading scorer. She is now second behind Megan Rogowski (1,625 points), who was on the team that Ginder spoke to three years ago.
Ginder also finished her career with 1,061 rebounds (now second on the school’s all-time list). She scored a career-high 35 points as a junior in 1993 and grabbed a career-high 25 rebounds her senior season.
“Corinne had all the intangibles, the things you don’t have to coach,” said Linda Mass, the Huskies’ coach during Ginder’s playing days. “She had the passion, the drive and she’d just get better and better with every practice.
“She was just a good all-around player. You know she would be consistent in every game. giving you points, rebound or steal. And she made everyone else around her better.”
Fendley was an assistant in Mass’ program. Mass is now the freshman girls basketball coach at Barrington.
“Early in my career, Corinne kind of set the standard for me as to what players in our program could strive to be,” Fendley said.

When the above-mentioned Corinne Vossel-Ginder was a senior, she had a sophomore teammate who has since been a varsity head coach for two different sports, one in Cook County and one in Lake. Name the person and the schools.
Men’s track and field
Ohio State sophomore Nick Batcha (Prospect) finished 10th in the 60-meter in a personal-best 6.83 seconds and 12th in the 200 meters in 21.50 at the Big Ten Indoor Conference Meet in Geneva, Ohio.
타 Augustana freshman Ethan Koch (Prospect) was fourth (8:59.32) in the 3000-meter run when the Vikings collected 283.5 points to win the Vikings Olympics.
Women’s track
Notre Dame senior Rebecca Tracy (Barrington) finished first in the mile with a time of 4:40.72 at the Big East Indoor Conference Meet in Geneva, Ohio, leading the Irish to the Big East Conference championship.
Three weeks later, she finished eighth in the mile with a time of 4:39.48 at Indoor Nationals at Fayetteville, Ark., and was named first-team All-American.
Purdue freshman Haley Goers (Hoffman Estates) finished sixth in the 3,000 meters and eighth in the 5,000 meters in a personal best 17:33.58 at the 35 team Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Purdue freshman Laura Maibuecher (Prospect) finished 13th in the 3,000 meters and 14th in the 5,000 meters in a personal best 17:48.70.
Men’s golf
Illinois Wesleyan sophomore Kenny Wienckowski (St. Viator) shot a 76 and finished sixth as the Titans defeated an elite field of the nation’s best en route to an 8-shot victory in the Jekyll Island Invitational.
Familiar faces on the links
Wisconsin junior Kris Woo (Conant) and Minnesota sophomore Taylor Quinn (Barrington) were former Mid-Suburban West standout golfers.
Now in college, they are still in the same conference — the Big Ten.
Their two teams finished one-two in the BYU Entrada Classic.
Yoo helped the Badgers (24-over-par 888) to their second team title of the season with a second-place finish (1-over par 71-72-74 for a 217). It was Yoo’s career-best finish and also tied her career-best 54-hole mark.
Minnesota finished 6 strokes behind in second with a 30-over 894.
It was the Gophers’ lowest team score since the 2011 spring season and is tied for the seventh-lowest score in the history of Gopher golf.
Quinn, a redshirt sophomore, established several career-lows during the tournament. Playing as an individual, she carded a career-low round of 73 during the final round to finish in a tie for ninth place, the first top-10 finish of her collegiate career. Her 54-hole card of 226 was also a career-best.
타 Bradley sophomore Allison Walsh (Prospect) earned her first career top-10 finish, placing fourth at the Cincinnati Spring Invitational after inclement weather forced the cancellation of Sunday’s final round.
Walsh shot a 36-hole score of 147, after firing a season-best 72 Saturday at the par-72 Plantation Inn Golf Resort.
Bradley finished second (605), matching the Braves’ best finish of the season.
Women’s swimming
Lake Forest College sophomore Christina Pekar (Prospect) moved up three spots in the consolation final to secure 10th place in 1-meter diving at the NCAA Division III Championships. It was her second honorable mention All-American performance of the meet.
Pekar posted a score of 398.95 points and finished 13th out of 24 divers in the prelims. After a short break, she climbed three places to 10th with a score of 411.05 points in the consolation final.
It was Pekar’s second event of the meet. She also placed 12th in the 3-meter diving competition.
Futures collide
Former Mid-Suburban West rival pitchers Lena Brottman (Fremd) of Emory and Kim Cygan (Barrington) of the University of Chicago used to be opponents.
But now they are teammates for the University Athletic Association student athletic council.
As presidents of their respective student athletic councils, they attended the UAA Student Athletic Council conference together this past summer.
They’ve also enjoyed good starts to this season.
Brottman, a sophomore, was one of five Eagles chosen to the University Athletic Association All-Tournament team held in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Emory (34-1), ranked No. 2 among Division III teams, won the conference crown with an 8-0 mark.
Brottman picked up four of the team’s wins, two in a starting capacity and a pair in relief.
She tossed 17 innings, striking out 10 with an ERA of 1.58.
In the team’s second-to-last outing at the championships, she threw 4 innings of scoreless relief against Rochester to help Emory prevail by 2-1 in 8 innings.
For the season, Brottman is 7-0, tossing 36 innings with 6 complete games in 8 starts. She sports an ERA of 0.96 and has struck out 20 while walking eight.
Cygan (16-5, 0.99) was selected as the University Athletic Association ‘Athlete of the Week’ for softball.
In 4 appearances, including 3 starts, Cygan posted a 2-1 record with a 0.29 ERA and 2 shutouts. In 24 innings of work, she allowed only 11 hits while recording 23 strikeouts.
Cygan was named MVP of the Wheaton College Invitational after tossing a 3-hit shutout against the host Thunder. She then threw a 4-hit shutout in the Maroons’ 1-0 win over 22nd-ranked Illinois Wesleyan the following day.
타 Playing her first season in the Big Ten, Illinois freshman shortstop Allie Bauch (Conant) has 13 hits, 6 RBI and 5 runs for the Illini.
Bauch was the 2012 Daily Herald Female Athlete of the Year.
Elite honor
St. Viator junior Parker Simonaitis, an umpire for Palatine youth baseball who has earned his IHSA patch, was selected to participate in the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar Program.
He was in a group of approximately 2,550 young men and women from around the nation and abroad who will attend the seminar.

Marquette Hall of Fame basketball star Abbie Willenborg-Gutzmer was the head coach for the St. Viator girls basketball team. She is now the head girls volleyball coach at Vernon Hills High School, where she teaches math.
