Lakes’ Androus nets conference’s defensive honor at Luther
John Androus left Lakes High School as its all-time leading scorer.
But the 6-foot-5 forward has shown he can do a little more than just play offense.
Now a junior at Luther College, Androus was named the 2012-2013 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball defensive player of the year.
Androus averaged 8.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1 steal.
He ranked ninth among the league’s players in steals, 10th in rebounding, 11th in assists and 26th in scoring.
Androus also shot 75.9 percent (63-of-83) at the free throw line to rank eighth.
He is the third consecutive Luther player selected for the award, following Jacy Dillahunty in 2011, the award’s inaugural year, and Tyler Wedemeier a year ago.
Ÿ Augustana senior center Brandon Kunz (Lake Zurich) was named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin second team.
Women’s swimming
Towson University junior Melanie Rowland (Vernon Hills) was a standout at the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming Championships held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
Towson won its fifth conference championship in the past six years as Rowland swam lifetime bests in all three of her events.
She finished 3rd in the 500 free (4:49.40), third in the 100 butterfly (54.44), and second in the 200 butterfly (1:57.89).
Her two butterfly swims earned her NCAA Division 1 consideration, and the 200 fly time was one of the 50 fastest swims in that event this year in the nation.
Softball
Loyola junior Lauren Moore (Antioch) has been named Horizon League Softball Player for the first time in her career.
At the season-opening Kickin’ Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Moore batted .500 (5-for-10) with a pair of home runs, 4 RBI, and 1.100 slugging percentage.
The third baseman couldn’t have scripted a better start to her season as she belted a 3-run home run in her first at-bat of the year as part of a 3-for-4 performance in the Ramblers’ 7-0 win over Rhode Island.
Moore followed that up with a solo home run and a single in Loyola’s 5-1 loss to Coastal Carolina.
Dating back to last season, she has now played 21 consecutive games without committing an error at third base, and she has hit safely in eight of the Ramblers’ last 11 outings.
Men’s track and field
Middlebury College sophomore Kevin Wood (Stevenson) finished seventh at the New England Indoor track championships at Boston College. He ran the 3000-meter run in 8:27.56.
Women’s lacrosse
Augustana freshman Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich) is the team’s leading scorer with 8 goals in three games on 17 shots. This is only the second year of varsity competition for Augustana, which was 15-3 in 2012.
Women’s tennis
The Augustana women’s team is 11-4 on the season and ranked 20th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Freshman Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein) and junior Kim Sawyer won three of four matches at No. 1 doubles. The pair sports a 13-6 record on the season. MacDonald also posted a 3-1 record at No. 3 singles, improving to 14-6 this season.
Women’s soccer
Eclipse Select Soccer Club midfielder Ann Marie Niro of Barrington has been named to a U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team camp, running March 2-9 in Chula Vista, Calif.
The camp, headed by new U-17 WNT head coach B.J. Snow, features 26 players and Eclipse Select is the lone club to have three representatives among the group.
Gary Fencik returning
The Barrington 220 Educational Foundation will host Gary Fencik at Barrington High School on Monday, March 11.
The interview style presentation will provide guests the opportunity to learn about the lessons Gary Fencik, a Barrington graduate, has learned on and off the football field.
Fencik was the team’s defensive captain during the 1985 Super Bowl championship season.
Additionally impressive is his academic and business background. He graduated from Northwestern and Yale and is currently a partner and head of business development for Adams Street Partners in Chicago.
Fencik will share both his business and sports experience.
The Barrington 220 Educational Foundation presents this event, titled Alumni Legends, in an effort to celebrate the high achievements of Barrington High School graduates.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. at Barrington High School.
Children and students are being offered tickets at no cost with a reservation. Adult tickets are $25 for the program and reservations are appreciated.
A reception will follow the program at the Barrington Country Bistro. Attendees will be able to meet Gary Fencik. Cost for the reception is $100 and includes the program.
