Jacobs grad Tamburrino exceling at Roosevelt

Jacobs alum Maria Tamburrino has made a name for herself in the Roosevelt University women’s basketball program.

Tamburrino, a three-sport athlete who earned 10 varsity letters at Jacobs, was the fifth recruit in the young history of the Roosevelt women’s program. She’s in her junior year at the Chicago school.

Tamburrino has played a big role in Roosevelt’s quick success. In only the third year of the program, the Lakers, an NAIA school, recently won the CCAC regular-season conference title and the CCAC tournament championships. These are the first conference championships for the school in any sport.

Roosevelt has qualified for the NAIA finals in Sioux City, Iowa next month.

Tamburrino, the only player to start every game in the program’s history, earned CCAC player of the week honors twice this year, collected her 1,000th career point earlier this month and registered a total of 12 double-doubles this season. Tamburrino, who leads the team in rebounds and double-doubles, was recently named to the all-CCAC first team.

Tamburrino, the first winner of the Roosevelt Female Laker of the Year award, heads into NAIA nationals averaging 14.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. She is shooting .461 from the field and .775 from the free-throw line. Tamburrino has connected on 40 3-pointers and has 74 assists, 63 steals and 25 blocked shots.

In the team’s 69-64 win over Cardinal Stritch to win the conference tournament title, Tamburrino scored the go-ahead basket with 1:22 left in regulation and added another key basket moments later to pad the team’s 1-point lead with 15 seconds left.

In that game, Tamburrino shot 7-for-9 from the field and scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half.

Tamburrino is studying to become a secondary math and special education teacher and a coach.

Roosevelt is ranked 10th in NAIA.

Videckis hits game-winning 3: Bartlett alum Haley Videckis, a freshman on the Arizona State University women’s basketball team, hit a 3-pointer with 22.8 seconds to play that proved to be the difference in the Sun Devils’ 59-58 win over Arizona in Pac-12 Conference play.

Arizona made 2 free throws with 40.7 seconds to play to go up 58-56. On the ensuing possession, Adrianne Thomas found Videckis open on the left perimeter for a 21-footer that turned out to be the game-winner.

Videckis shot 3-for-5 from the 3-point line and finished with 13 points for Arizona State (13-15, 5-11).

To start the week, Videckis had played in 27 of the team’s 28 games and was averaging 20.9 minutes. She was shooting .402 from the field and .700 from the free-throw line, while averaging 6.7 points and 3.4 rebounds. She also had 12 steals.

In a recent loss to Colorado, Videckis had 6 points and 5 rebounds in 16 minutes of play.

Kumerow earns all-conference honors: South Elgin product Cortney Kumerow recently was named to the 2012-13 all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team.

Kumerow led the Warhawks in field goals made (127), free throws made (105), free-throw percentage (. 868), rebounds (208), blocked shots (39) and points-per-game (13.3). She also ranks in the Top 5 in the WIAC in each of those categories.

This season Kumerow became only the second women’s basketball player and third player in Whitewater basketball history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocked shots.

Kumerow was an all-WIAC selection last year as well.

Yohn at Bradley: St. Edward graduate Katie Yohn is a senior on the Bradley University women’s basketball team. To start the week, Yohn had played in 24 games for the Braves (19 starts) and was averaging 27.2 minutes of action. She was shooting .414 from the field and .809 from the free-throw line (38-for-47). She had 27 3-pointers to go with 63 assists (40 turnovers), 20 blocked shots and 50 steals. She was averaging 11.0 points and 6.2 rebounds (second-best on the team) per game. Her 20 blocked shots were tops on the team.

In a recent 83-65 MVC loss to Creighton, Yohn had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in 33 minutes of play.

In a 93-84 win over Drake, she had 18 points on 7-for-15 shooting. She also registered 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals in 29 minutes.

Bradley opened the week 11-14 overall and 5-9 in MVC play.

Brown at North Dakota State: Elgin graduate Kory Brown is a member of the North Dakota State men’s basketball team.

Brown has been one of many contributors to the team’s 20-8 mark (11-4 in Summit League play).

To start the week, Brown had played in all 28 of the team’s games (27 starts) and was averaging 24.9 minutes of play.

Brown was averaging 5.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while shooting .463 from the field and .712 from the free-throw line. Brown also had 59 assists (42 turnovers), 30 steals and 9 blocked shots.

In a recent 68-53 loss to Akron, Brown had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 4 steals in 31 minutes. In a 75-39 win over IUPUI, Brown had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 25 minutes.

Freeman at SIU: Cary-Grove graduate Josh Freeman recently earned all-Missouri Valley Conference honors after finishing second in the men’s shot put at the MVC indoor track and field championships held at the University of Northern Iowa. Freeman, ranked 26th in the country among shot-put throwers after the event, threw 56-3 3/4 but finished second to Indiana State’s Derek Bunch.

Scheffler at McKendree: Burlington Central alum Ashley Scheffler is a junior second baseman on the McKendree University softball team in Lebanon, Ill.

In a recent doubleheader split against Southwest Baptist, Scheffler had an RBI single and a grand-slam home run in the opener. Her home run broke an 8-8 tie in the fifth inning.

In the second-game loss, Scheffler had an RBI single. She went 3-for-5 in the first game with 5 RBI.
