Aquin, Mount Pulaski to play for 1A title

Senior all-stater Sophie Brunner hit a jumpshot with six seconds left to play Friday afternoon, lifting top-ranked defending state champion Freeport Aquin to a 39-38 win over Annawan in the Class 1A girls basketball state semifinals at Redbird Arena in Normal.

Annawan’s Maddie Jackson had given her team a 38-37 lead with a layup with 25 seconds left to play and then Aquin’s Kate Style missed a 3-pointer. But the Bulldogs’ Elayna Erdmier came up with the offensive rebound to set up Brunner’s game-winning shot.

Brunner led Aquin (31-3) with 21 points and 12 rebounds and Stykel added 8 points.

Morgan Van Hyftle had 16 points for Annawan (29-4, while all-stater Celine Van Hyftle added 12 points and 5 rebounds.

Mount Pulaski 49, Cowden-Herrick 41: Andrea Dickerson scored 18 points and Jessica Awe added 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Mount Pulaski (30-4) in the second Class 1A semifinal. Micah Jones scored 26 points and had 21 points for Cowden-Herrick (26-6). Mount Pulaski outscored Cowden-Herrick 34-17 in the second half.
