Judge clears former Waukegan High star Richmond to play semipro basketball

A former Waukegan High basketball star has been cleared to play with a semipro team, but only if he stays out of trouble while on probation and checks into the Lake County jail for up to four consecutive weekends.

Jereme Richmond, 20, of Waukegan, who also played at the University of Illinois, had asked Lake County Judge John Phillips earlier this month if he could move to Sterling to play for the Sauk Valley Predators in the Premier Basketball League.

However, Richmond, who has been on probation since 2011 due to weapons violations, was not cleared by Phillips to move until he finishes probation in Lake County.

Following a meeting with prosecutors and defense attorneys this week, Phillips said he would allow Richmond play for the team as long as he spends eight days — four consecutive weekends — in Lake County jail. However, Phillips said, that sentence could be reduced and Richmond could end his jail time in two weekends due to good behavior.

Richmond turned himself in to the jail Friday for his first weekend of incarceration.

Phillips also told Richmond on that he must routinely attended his substance abuse and sexual violence courses and stay in constant contact with his probation officer.

Richmond is expected to practice with the team only three days a week to conform to the demands of his probation, and he must drive to and from the games each night. He also must submit to a drug test when he returns to Lake County after each game.

Richmond’s probation ends July 23.

The Predators season begins in March and runs through July.
