Hard-working Hersey wins again

Mary Fendley has been in the business as Hersey girls basketball coach for 15 seasons.

Never has she had a team work harder than this one.

The Huskies fittingly put that work ethic on display in their final home game on Tuesday night at the Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

With junior Morgan Harris (18 points), senior Casey Weyhrich (12) and junior Renee Poulos (12) all reaching double figures, the Huskies won for the fifth time in their last six games by defeating Barrington 56-45.

The Huskies (16-10) wound up 8-1 on their home floor, their only loss to state-ranked Rolling Meadows.

“I’m really proud of the girls for how they finished the regular season,” said Fendley, who won her 300th game 12 days ago. “They have worked as hard as any team I have coached.”

Junior Angie Kirchoff (11 points), freshman Bryana Hopkins (9) and freshman Kelly Katis (8) led the Fillies (15-14).

Elk Grove 54, Palatine 13: Senior Diamond Boyd (16 points), junior Melissa Solorio (10) and senior Stephanie Solis (10) sparked host Elk Grove in the MSL crossover win.

Elk Grove (18-10) put up a stellar defensive effort limiting the Pirates to 5 baskets.

Kelly Naughton chipped in 7 points and Kari Czeszewski 5 for the Grens.

Senior guard Nia Pappas led Palatine (19-9) with 5 points while juniors Morgan Radtke and Morgan Gallagher each hit a 3-pointer.

Buffalo Grove 64, Hoffman Estates 37: Senior center Bailey North scored a game-high 16 points in the final home game of a four-year varsity career. Sophomore Julie Jambrone added 15 points and Alyssa Mills 8 for the Bison (8-16).

Becca Stoczynski paced Hoffman (10-14) with 15 points, all in the first half. Teammate Mary Saitta added 9.

Old-Dominion recruit Destinee Young did to play.

Hawks coach Mike Nocella said the senior is having her knee examined.

Conant 35, Wheeling 28: Senior Sarah Mazurek made 5-of-5 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 14 points for visiting Conant (12-14).

Katie Lomas chipped in 8 points for the Cougars while teammate DeeDee Durr had five.

Sophomore guard Deanna Kuzmanic led the Wildcats (7-20) with 10 points.

Class 1A regional: Christian Liberty (16-9) advanced to Thursday’s championship of the Harvest Christian regional with a 47-17 victory over Elgin Academy. The Chargers will play the host school.

Junior forward Vivian Barclay (10 points, 11 steals, 9 rebounds), finished one rebound away from a triple double.

Sophomore guard Jessica Moriarty had 13 points (three 3-pointers) and 5 blocks.

Junior Shelbi Hernandez had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while junior guard Megan Sullivan added 8 points, 6 steals and 5 assists. Freshman Samantha Amedin collected 8 rebounds.
