Elk Grove’s Boyd surpasses 1,000 points

Senior night turned out to be golden for Diamond Boyd.

The Elk Grove standout 5-foot-10 forward scored her 1,000th point with a free throw in the second quarter and finished with a game-high 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals in the Grenadiers’ 59-35 victory over visiting Dundee-Crown.

“To be honest, I had absolutely no idea how many points I had,” said Boyd, who scored 17 points by intermission when the Grens (14-8) led 29-10. “I’ve been wondering because I’ve seen some of my friends do it (reach 1,000).

“I was hoping I was close. It was really cool to do it on senior night, and I could have never done it without my teammates.”

One of those teammates, Kelly Naughton, has played the past four years with Boyd on the varsity.

“This was a big night and I’m glad we did so well,” said Naughton, who had 11 points and 3 assists. “I am so proud of Diamond. She deserves everyone of those points. I’m so glad I’ve gotten to play with her for four years and it will be sad when we are through.”

Grens coach Kathie Swanson started her five seniors. Boyd and Naughton were joined by Stephanie Solis, Kari Czeszewski and Isabel Velasquez.

“It was great celebrating senior night and watching the girls play together and executing,” Swanson said. “And then Diamond getting her 1,000 point just capped off the night.”

Junior Melissa Solorio added 13 points for the Grens, who committed only 5 turnovers.

Elk Grove (14-8, 5-1) visits Prospect (11-10, 2-4) today at 7:30 p.m. in the Mid-Suburban East. The Grens host first-place Rolling Meadows (20-1, 6-0) on Friday and then Zion-Benton visits on Saturday for a nonconference game.

“It’s a busy week,” Boyd said. “But we are going to fight through it.”

St. Viator 50, Lake Forest Academy 48: St. Viator junior guard Erin Fabbri hit 2 free throws with 3.4 seconds left to lift the Lions to their third win in the Season’s End tournament at Fenton High School.

After Lake Forest tied the game at 48, St. Viator guard Susie Moynihan called a timeout and the Lions were able to set up their final play.

Fabbri got a handoff on the wing and used a screen from Michelle Presslak to drive to the basket when she was fouled before converting the winning free throws.

Fabbri led the Lions (14-10) with 28 points, including 2 3-pointers.

Sophomore Jessica Hohlweg added 7 points for the winners while junior Didi Aburaad added 5, including a 3-pointer.
