Zaumseil, Barrington measure up at Grant

Barrington coach Bryan Tucker was quick to recall the last time standout senior Brad Zaumseil played in the Grant High School gym.

“The last time he was here, I remember looking at the score book and saw he didn’t score,” Tucker said. “But I also remember that he was in complete control of that game. The scorebook didn’t tell the story.”

Fast forward two years later, and the scorebook Tucker read this time looked a lot different. The point total was for Zaumseil surged, and the outcome for the Broncos was different as well.

Much like his sophomore season, Zaumseil was the best player on the floor. Zaumseil scored a career-high 31 points on a blistering 10-for-17 from the field to lead Barrington in a 71-53 romp over the Bulldogs on Saturday night in nonconference play.

“He had a pretty good night’s work sharing the ball and dominating the game,” Tucker said of Zaumseil who also added 7 assists, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. “He had such a good night, we decided to give him (Sunday) off.”

The hot streak for Zaumseil started early as he hit 6 of his first 7 shots on his way to an 18-point first half and a 41-25 lead for Barrington (11-7) at the break.

“This is definitely a cool gym to play in — gets you pumped up,” Zaumseil said. “Once I got into a rhythm I was able to keep shooting and the guys helped out by running the floor, too.”

One of those guys was junior Zach Bart. He was the beneficiary of the play of Zaumseil and senior guard Scott Nelson. Bart finished with a career-best 21 points, with all 10 of his baskets coming on assists from Zaumseil and Nelson.

“Any time Brad or Scott have the ball and you’re open, you know they are going to get it to you,” Bart said. “This is my first year playing with both guys and they really fire the ball in there so you got to be ready for it.”

Barrington built its margin to as many as 20 in the third quarter before Grant (7-10) made a big run to get back into the game. A 15-2 run that carried into the fourth quarter pulled the hosts to within 57-48 with 6:37 left. But back-to-back buckets from Zaumseil ended the run.

Junior Mike Burns’ big 3-pointer during the spurt aided the Bulldogs’ effort. He led Grant with 11 points.

“We started getting some good looks form our offense there in the fourth quarter, both in the post and on the weak side,” said Grant coach Wayne Bosworth. “We also did better on Zaumseil — we didn’t do a good job on him all night. He is a terrific player that can shoot, defend and really pass the ball as well.”

Tom Blanchette scored 8 of his 10 points in the second half for Grant.
