Lakes rallies past Grant

Lakes’ girls basketball team started off the New Year “a little sluggish and a lot sick,” coach Pete Schneider said.

The Eagles fell behind host Grant by a couple of points after one quarter, but rallied to win Saturday’s North Suburban Prairie Division game by a 57-43 final.

“I wish I had the answer for why we do not get ourselves going to start the game,” Schneider said. “We have tried different warm-ups, less time in the locker room, and nothing seems to get us up and ready to start a game.

“Grant came out ready to play and showed their toughness.”

Grant (6-12, 2-4) led 8-0 early. After Lakes (10-8, 5-2) called a timeout, the Eagles responded well and trailed 10-8 after one quarter.

Amanda Smith scored 7 of her 11 points in the second quarter, as Lakes outscored the hosts 20-7 to take a 28-17 lead into the locker room.

“We started playing defense, led by Maya Schmitt and Nicole Mogged, and then started hitting some shots,” Schneider said.

Smith also dished out 8 assists.

“Amanda Smith sees the floor so well,” Schneider said. “Amanda had some passes today that everyone in the gym appreciated.”

Lakes was led by Terese McMahon with 14 points. Alexis Lee and Mogged added 8 apiece.

“We have a bunch of sick kids right now,” Schneider said. “The flu bug has been bad this year and we have been without 1-2 kids every day. Hopefully we can get healthy. Many kids stepped up today. We always speak about being a team of 14, and today we needed every healthy body.”

Grant, which lost for the eighth time in its last nine games, was led by Taylor Rossi with 12 points. Tania Trbojevich added 10 and Kaylie Kanzler had 9.

Grayslake Central 47, Crystal Lake Central 28: Morgan Dahlstrom scored a game-high 14 points, as the host Rams improved to 10-7 and 3-0 in the Fox Valley Fox Division.

Grayslake Central also received 9 points from Lauren Spalding (two 3-pointers) and 8 from Carson Sparkman.

Crystal Lake South 44, Mundelein 32: Becca Woit scored 17 points for the Mustangs, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Lauren Rouse had 10 points for Mundelein (5-12) in the nonconference game.

Fenwick 66, Carmel 60: Claire Ogrinc and Kayla Quinn each scored 16 points for the host Corsairs in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game.

Carmel (11-6, 1-3) had won four of five in capturing Warren’s Blue Devil Classic. Fenwick improved to 14-2 and 3-1.
