Barrington bounces back against New Trier
Barrington’s girls basketball team assured itself of at least a .500 record in its first appearance in the prestigious Dundee-Crown Charger Classic.
And with a win today at 5 p.m. against Mother McAuley, the Fillies would end up in fifth place with a 3-1 record.
Coach Babbi Barreiro watched her young Fillies (11-6) improve to 2-1 in the 30th edition of the Classic by posting a 38-22 win over New Trier on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Bryana Hopkins led the offense with 11 points and 8 rebounds while classmate Megan Talbot pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds along with splendid defense.
“Megan Talbot did a wonderful job on their excellent post player (Jeannie Boehm, who had 6 points),” Barreiro said. “That was huge part of the game for us. And Bryana probably played one of her best games at both ends of the floor.”
Senior forward Alexa Resch added 8 points for the Fillies and Aoife Callanan 6 with a pair of 3-pointers.
“Kelly Katis gave us good minutes off the bench,” Barreiro added. “She handled the ball well. It was a nice team win again but the thing I was most impressed about is that we talked about playing four quarters and we really did that.
“So I was proud of the kids. I’ve got a lot of respect for New Trier and what they do over there so I felt our kids really played well.”
Fremd 62, Zion-Benton 47: Senior guard Ashley McConnell outdid herself again.
For the third time in a week, she broke her own career record.
This time, McConnell lit up the scoreboard for 38 point as the Vikes improved to 15-4 and 2-1 in the Montini tournament.
It was her third game over 30 points in six games.
“Ashley is on fire right now,” said Fremd coach Dave Yates. “She is playing at a level that is amazing.”
McConnell was 11 of 13 at the free throw line and converted three 3-pointers.
“And Ashley is not getting 38 points on 25 shots,” Yates said. “It’s coming more on about 15 to 17 shots a game. Her 35 the other night (against Proviso West) came off 14 shots. Ashley’s efficiency is unbelievable. I hope she keeps breaking her personal records.”
Hannah LaBarge added 9 points for Fremd, followed by Sydney Sek (6) and Briana Lewis (5).
“We played much better defense in the 2nd half,” said Yates, whose team was down 39-35 at intermission. “They really pounded us the first half.”
Fremd will face Romeoville for fifth place today at 3 p.m.
Buffalo Grove 68, St. Charles North 53: Bailey North scored a season-high 20 points with 9 rebounds as the Bison got their first win in the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic.
Sophomore Julie Jambrone added 17 points for the winners (4-10). She and freshman Maddie Welter had a pair of 3-painter.
Senior Alyssa Mills added 8 points for BG and Kimberly Herzog chipped in 6.
Resurrection 64, Maine West 54: Brittany Collins scored 25 points with 10 rebounds and 3 assists while teammate Georgia Petersen chipped in 7 points and 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
Alexia Prosperi also scored 7 points for West with 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
Hoffman Estates 48, Lake Park 20: Shante Hill (13 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists), Becca Stoczynski (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Destinee Young (10 points, 9 rebounds) led Hoffman in the third round of the Mundelein Holiday Classic.
Woodstock 50, Christian Liberty 46: Shelbi Hernandez (22 points), Megan Sullivan (11 points) and Jess Moriarty (9) paced the Chargers (10-3) in the second round of the Aldron-Hebron Tournament.
Palatine 42, Wheeling 31: Sophomore Monica Masini (17 points) and junior Morgan Radtke (8 points, on 8-of-8 free throws) led Palatine (15-4) at the Blue devil Classic at Warren High School.
Wheeling (6-12) received 14 points from sophomore guard Deanna Kuzmanic.
Willowbrook 57, Hersey 54 (OT): Senior Erica Hill and junior Morgan Harris each scored 12 points to pace Hersey (8-7) at the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North.
From the second quarter until overtime, Hersey never trailed and led by as many as 8 points.
Huskies senior guard Casey Weyhrich did not play due to an ankle injury she suffered the day before against Wheaton North early in the second quarter.
Hersey will wrap up tourney play today against Hinsdale Central at 1:30 p.m.
Downers Grove North 62, Schaumburg 52: The Saxons are now 6-9 and 1-2 in the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North.
Elk Grove 57, Hinsdale Central 47: Senior Diamond Boyd scored 26 points and junior Melissa Solorio added 23 for Elk Grove (10-6) which will play for fifth place today at the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North.
St. Viator 55, Fenton 29: St. Viator advanced to the championship game of it owns Snowflake Tournament as Michelle Presslak and Erin Fabbri 13 each scored points for the Lions (10-8).
St. Viator will face Maine East today at 7:30 p.m. for the title.
Leyden 52, Northside Prep 32: Victoria Galizia and Sylvia Vasquez each chipped in 10 points to lead the Eagles to the win in the St. Viator Snowflake Tournament.
