Barrington improves to 3-0 at Jacobs

Senior guard Brad Zaumseil scored a game-high 20 points to help Barrington post its third straight victory in Jacobs tournament play with a 53-51 decision over Rockford Jefferson in the first game of the day Thursday.

Zach Bart contributed 10 points in a game that was close the whole way.

The Broncos improved to 9-6 overall and advanced to championship bracket play with a 6 p.m. game Friday against Crystal Lake South.

Elk Grove 60, Johnsburg 57 (OT): Joell Melendez had a game-high 18 points to help the Grenadiers bounce back from a Wednesday loss at Jacobs.

Austin Amann (13 points) and Kishan Patel (12) also broke into double figures for the Grens (8-5).

Vernon Hills 58, Wheeling 49: Jeremy Stephani scored a game-best 19 points and Kameron Hill had 15 for the host Wildcats, but Vernon Hills had a 19-9 scoring in the fourth quarter to pull out a victory in morning consolation bracket play.

Trenton Fulton had 14 points to lead Vernon Hills, and Stephen Curry and Brett Peterson had 11 apiece.

Chris Pierro made a pair of 3s and finished with 10 points for Wheeling (3-11).

Prospect 58, Streamwood 50: Tommy Flahaven had a team-best 14 points and Bobby Frasco had 13 to go with 4 blocks and 2 assists in a consolation bracket victory. The Knights (9-3) led by 2 entering the fourth quarter but scored 19 in the final period.

Streamwood got a big game from senior center Zach Harris, who finished with a game-high 21 points with 10 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Rolling Meadows 46, Wheaton North 44: The Mustangs got a basket from Matt Dolan with 1.6 seconds left to earn a victory at Hinsdale South.

Andy Pletch blocked the ensuing inbounds play to prevent the Falcons from getting a shot at tying or taking the lead.

Next up for Rolling Meadows, which had 9 points from Brian Sabal, is Graves County, Kent., in a 1:15 p.m. game Friday.

Buffalo Grove 86, Islamic Foundation 42: Andrew Apel (15 points), Luke Potnick (12), Steve Soifer (10) and Todd Ahlers (10) each reached double-figure scoring as the Bison picked up a consolation bracket victory at Elgin.

The Bison (6-7) produced 34 points in the second quarter.

Harlan 55, Hoffman Estates 52: Joe Biko scored a team-high 20 points but the Hawks fell short in consolation bracket action at Elgin. Connors Schwartz had 11 points, including a pair of 3s, for Hoffman Estates (1-11).

Plainfield East 55, Hersey 44: Mike Fuerst led the Huskies with 15 points and 11 rebounds, but Hersey had an offensive lull in the second quarter with just 6 points scored in a first-round loss at the Pekin Holiday Tournament.

Connor Watters had 8 points and Alex Sutrinaitis 7 for the Huskies.

Plainfield East had a game-best 16 points from Deontre’ Brown.

Christian Liberty 45, Keith School 34: David Colbert made five 3s and Wesley Swiderek had 3 to help the Chargers earn a tournament victory at the Alden-Hebron tournament. Colbert finished with a game-high 19 points and Swiderek had 18.

Conant 38, Lane Tech 33: Another terrific defensive effort helped the Cougars to a second straight win at the Tosh Holiday Classic at York.

One more victory in Friday’s 12:30 p.m. game against Holy Trinity puts Conant (8-4) into Saturday’s championship bracket.

Conant coach Tom McCormack said he appreciated the defensive execution his group is showing but also would welcome better production at the offensive end.

“With us, it kind of starts and ends with defense,” he said. “But I feel like we’re kind of making it hard for ourselves.”
