Vernon Hills nets victory against Mundelein

Sydney Smith had 17 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals, as Vernon Hills’ undefeated girls basketball team opened the Mundelein Mustang Holiday Classic with a 54-29 win over the host school Wednesday morning.

Lauren Webb added 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Meri Bennett-Swanson totaled 10 points and 10 boards for the Cougars, who led 17-8 after one quarter and 30-18 at halftime. Alina Lehocky chipped in 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals for Vernon Hills (15-0), which plays at 9 a.m. again today, when it faces Cary-Grove (8-4) at Mundelein.

Smith sank three 3-pointers, including one in each of the first three quarters.

Mundelein (2-11) received 9 points from Becca Mahar, who sank three 3-pointers. The Mustangs play Lake Park at 10:30 a.m. today.

Antioch 49, Chicago Christian 30: At Lisle, the Sequoits had what coach Tim Borries called a “flat” second quarter, getting outscored 12-2, and they trailed 18-17 at halftime. But they outscored their opponent 8-3 in the third quarter and 24-9 in the fourth to win their tournament opener.

Antioch (11-4) forced 43 turnovers, while Megan Borries scored 13 of her game-high 15 points in the second half. Rachel Schwabe added 9 points on three 3-pointers, and Alex Fracek grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 6 points.

Paige Gallimore added 7 points and 7 rebounds for the Sequoits, who play Chicago Latin at 6:30 p.m. today back at Lisle.

Grayslake Central 40, Niles North 25: At Warren, Morgan Dahlstrom and Carson Sparkman scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Rams improved to 2-0 in the tournament with another strong defensive effort.

Grayslake Central (8-5) trailed 9-3 after one quarter, before outscoring Niles North 17-5 in the second. The Rams play Wheeling at 4:30 p.m. today at Warren.

Warren 38, Deerfield 34: At Warren, Alyssa Phillips’ 14 points led the host Blue Devils in Wednesday’s finale.

Warren (7-6, 1-1) take on Palatine at 7:30 p.m. today.
