BG wins opener for Kolodziej

Buffalo Grove girls basketball coach Steve Kolodziej didn’t have to wait long for his first career win.

The Bison rookie coach watched his team open the season with a 55-50 victory over Westinghouse on Thursday night in the Buffalo Grove.

Bailey North (11 points), Courtney Meyer (10) and Kimberly Herzog (10) led the way on offense.

Carly Cheever added 6 points for the winners in the their first game of the Buffalo Grove Thanksgiving tourney.

Maine South 49, Barrington 41: Junior guard Angie Kirchoff led the Fillies (1-1) with 19 points (2 3-pointers) in their first game of the Buffalo Grove tourney against the highly-regarded Hawks (2-0).

Barrington senior forward Alexa Resch added 9 points with 10 rebounds and junior teammate Aoife Callanan had 7 with 3 steals.

The top rebounders for the Fillies were freshman Bryanna Hopkins (5), freshman Megan Talbot (3) and sophomore Bailee McDonald (2).

Illinois bound Jacqui Grant, a 6-foot-3 forward, led Maine South with 15 points.

“Alexa (5-10) did a nice job on Grant,” said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro. “I was real encouraged. Maine South has some nice depth and experience back and I thought we battle the all the way.”

On many occasions, Barreiro had three freshmen on the floor with two other underclassmen.

“We learned a lot,” she said. “I have a lot of respect for what he (Hawks coach Mark Smith) does there, and I was happy with how we played.

“We didn’t shoot real well but we were in the game all the way. Defensively, we made a few mistake that hurt but I was real proud of the kids.”

Hoffman Estates 49, Lake Park 36: The Hawks improved to 2-0 in the Elk Grove-Hoffman Estates tourney as seniors Becca Stoczynski (17 points), Destinee Young (15 points) and Shante Hill (9) led the way.

Classmate Rachel Mirabile added 7 for the Hawks, who led 23-5 after the first quarter and saw Lake Park get close only in the late stages of the game.

Schaumburg 53, Rockford Boylan 50: Schaumburg improved to 2-0 in its own Thanksgiving tourney as sophomore Jada Blackwell (13 points), junior Madison Laramie (10) and senior Amanda Kelly (8) were its top scorers.

Kelly had a pair of 3-pointers while Blackwell and sophomore Brittany Reinhart each had one.

Neuqua Valley 44, Prospect 39: Neuqua Valley handed Prospect (2-1, 1-1) its first loss at the York tourney.

Sophomore Taylor Will (10 points) and senior Michele Molini (8) each had pair of 3-pointers for the Knights.

Sophomore teammate Catherine Sherwood chipped in 9 points while Adriane Falagario also hit a 3-pointer for Prospect, which faces Conant at 6 p.m. today when they tourney resumes.
