Man accused of killing former prep basketball star

A Chicago man has been charged in the shooting death of a former public school basketball star who recently committed to play for Iona College.

Cinque Lee is accused of shooting to death 22-year-old Michael Haynes on July 26 as he was trying, according to his family, to break up a fight over a stolen necklace.

Cook County state’s attorney spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said Wednesday the 20-year-old Lee was taken into custody early Tuesday after witnesses identified him as the shooter in Haynes’ slaying.

Haynes played at Corliss and Washington high schools in Chicago. After high school, he transferred around before playing at Indian Hills Junior College in Iowa last season.

Iona College officials say Haynes was to play for the New Rochelle, N.Y., school this upcoming season.
