Palatine returns to win column

Palatine’s boys basketball team has been playing better the last few weeks but had nothing to show for it in the victory column.

Until Tuesday night’s Mid-Suburban League crossover when the Pirates erupted for their biggest offensive output of the season in a 68-63 victory over visiting Elk Grove.

Freshman Roosevelt Smart scored 19 points to help the Pirates (3-23) end an eight-game losing streak and beat Elk Grove for the second time this season. John Millin scored 15 points and Tom Hauert added 12 points.

“Good things happen when you share the ball,” said Palatine coach Eric Millstone. “Hauert really rebounded well. He rebounded tonight like somebody was taking something from him and (6-foot-5 Josh) Baldus’ presence inside was a problem for them.”

Austin Amann scored a game-high 23 points for Elk Grove (12-15). Jeff Miceli added 12 points and Zach Solorio chipped in 11 points.

Fremd 45, Buffalo Grove 42: Sophomore Riley Glassman (14 points) hit 2 free throws in a 1-and-1 situation with 11 seconds left to set the final score for host Fremd (15-11) in the MSL crossover win.

Garrett Peters added 12 points and hit three 3s and sophomore Ben Carlson came off the bench to score 9 points. The Vikings went from an 8-point deficit in the third quarter to a 7-point lead in the fourth before hanging on.

“It was a good game for us to be in going into the playoffs,” said Fremd coach Bob Widlowski.

Luke Potnick scored 24 points and hit five 3s for BG (10-16).

Hersey 62, Hoffman Estates 54: Hersey (12-14) scored the final 9 points of the MSL crossover to complete a comeback from a 29-19 deficit at Hoffman Estates (8-15).

Sean Reszotko scored 15 points to lead the balanced Huskies, who matched their first-half point total in the third quarter.

“We did nothing offensively in the first and second quarter,” said Hersey coach Steve Messer. “In the third quarter we went right to the rim, basket, right to the rim, basket. Sure enough a couple of 3s go down.”

Kevin Kozil (14 points) had both 3s for Hersey, Vuk Vukovic scored 10 points and Jared Martin added 8 points.

Austin Terry led Hoffman with 21 points and hit three 3s.

Prospect 65, Barrington 51: Mike LaTulip had 28 points and 4 assists as visiting Prospect (17-8) overcame a 30-26 halftime deficit in the MSL crossover.

Brad Reibel had 12 points and 3 assists, Jack Landwehr had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists and Bobby Frasco had 7 rebounds as the Knights won for the seventh time in nine tries.

John Schneider led Barrington (18-10) with 19 points and Brad Zaumseil added 11.

Conant 59, Wheeling 34: Tim Manczko (15 points), Mitch Tednes (12 points), D’Angelo McBride (10 points) and Sean Bourke (9 points) led host Conant (13-13) to the MSL crossover victory. Jeremy Stephani had 12 points and Ziggy Jasiunas added 9 points for Wheeling (2-24).

Maine South 47, Maine West 40: Maine South (17-12) overcame a 23-22 halftime deficit to beat Maine West (12-14) for the second time this season in the Central Suburban League crossover in Des Plaines.

Kevin Garcia had 13 points and three 3s, Jon Augustine scored 12 points and Dylan Carson added 9 for the Warriors in their fifth straight loss.

Frank Dounis scored 16 points for the Hawks, who were 19-for-27 on free throws to 3-for-4 by Maine West.
