Third-quarter spurt lifts Buffalo Grove

Buffalo Grove 46, Waukegan 35: Nursing a 2-point lead at half, Buffalo Grove broke open its Class 4A Warren girls basketball regional play-in game by outscoring Waukegan 16-4 in the third quarter and went on to a 46-35 triumph.

The No. 15-seeded Bison (6-24) advanced to today’s 6 p.m. final and will face No. 2 Rolling Meadows (25-4), which won the Mid-Suburban League championship last week.

“We will have to care of the basketball,” said Bison coach Pat Dudle about tonight’s third matchup this season with the Mustangs. “And we have to do all the little things well.”

Junior forward Alyssa Mills stepped up with a career-high 10 points on Monday, sharing team-scoring honors with junior Bailey North and sophomore Kim Herzog.

“No question, it was Alyssa’s best game,” Dudle said. “We needed her to step up with Bailey North (hyperextended elbow) and Emily Cho (knee) seeing limited time, and Alyssa did. She played some great minutes in the post.

“And Kim Herzog sparked us defensively at the start of the third quarter.”
