First quarter stuns Hersey

Hersey and Niles North were nearly even for three quarters of Saturday night’s nonconference boys basketball game in Skokie.

The problem for the Huskies was the first eight minutes where they surrendered 33 points and trailed by 18 en route to an 80-60 loss.

“They were just too fast for us,” said Hersey coach Steve Messer, “but after the first quarter we adjusted and played pretty well.”

Trevor Haas led the Huskies (10-13) with a career-high 18 points and two 3-pointers. Justin Jobski and Sean Reszotko added 11 points apiece.

Tafari Beckford (22 points), Malachi Nix (21 points) and Mycheal Henley (15 points) led Niles North (17-7).

NAC Tournament: Christian Liberty (16-10) finished third in the inaugural Northeastern Athletic Conference tournament with a 49-39 win over Luther North at Grace Gym in Arlington Heights.

The Chargers lost their semifinal 58-32 to Rockford Christian Life. Rockford Christian beat Christian Life 60-51 for the title.

Downers South 60, Leyden 33: Leyden (15-8, 6-5) saw its five-game winning streak snapped in the West Suburban Gold loss at Downers South (19-4, 9-1). The Eagles visit unbeaten Proviso East on Tuesday and host Mid-Suburban East champion Rolling Meadows next Saturday.
