Guards pace Buffalo Grove victory

Buffalo Grove guards Luke Potnick and Alex Fritz came up with big offensive production in the Bison’s 64-39 nonconference win at Maine East in Park Ridge on Wednesday night.

The Bison interior defense blocked 9 shots, 8 in the first half as Buffalo Grove (7-12) built a 33-14 lead at the break and coasted.

Fritz scored 11 of his 18 points in the first quarter as Buffalo Grove led 14-7 after the first.

Potnick (23 points, 5 rebounds) picked up the pace by hitting 2 of his 5 3-pointers in the second quarter. Fritz added 5 points, and Andrew Apel added 4 as the Bison outscored the Blue Demons 19-7.

“Our guard play was really good tonight,” said Bison coach Ryan O’Connor. “I felt if we focused on defense and put some pressure on them, we had a good chance.

“Fritz has begun to pick it up. The season is progressing and I think he wants to make something of it down the stretch. Luke played a real good game with the points and he had a few assists (5). He played with confidence.”

Sam Wacker led the Bison block party with 3. The Bison also forced 25 Blue Demon turnovers.

Maine East (4-13) was led in scoring by Ezeke Omeke (16 points) and Aaron Shannon (9).
