St. Viator successfully caps busy weekend
Daily Herald report

St. Viator's boys basketball team went from two weeks between games to three in four days.

The Lions capped the busy stretch in perfect fashion Monday by allowing only 15 second-half points to pull away to a 63-41 victory over Marian Central Catholic in Woodstock North's Martin Luther King Classic.

"The layoff in the long run really helped us," said Viator coach Mike Howland after his team improved to 15-2. "We tried to get back to focusing on our defense and overall this weekend it was pretty darn good.

"I felt we got back to where we were before the Wheeling tournament and that's a good thing."

Viator sophomore Ore Arogundade led all scorers with 19 points and Kevin Walsh had 12 and hit two 3-pointers. Chris Myjak added 8 points and D.J. Morris scored 7 points.

The Lions led only 32-26 at halftime but outscored Marian 14-1 in the third quarter.

Viator shot only 3-for-21 from 3-point range but was 23-for-33 inside the arc.

"We buckled down on the defensive end in the third quarter," Howland said. "We were very lackluster in the first half and we didn't make shots.

"We got a bunch of stops, Ore got out on the break and Myjak did a great job at both ends of the floor in the third quarter."

New Trier 57, Buffalo Grove 33: Sam Wacker had 12 points to lead BG (5-12) in the nonconference loss in Winnetka. Princeton-bound Steven Cook led New Trier (15-2) with 20 points.
