Glenbard North stops Buffalo Grove

For those who like exact measures when watching their sports, the third quarter of Thursday afternoon’s seventh-place game of the Elgin Holiday Tournament determined the winner.

After two Buffalo Grove baskets to open the third period, Glenbard North erupted for a 19-0 run and went on to prevail 74-65.

“I envisioned we were capable of playing that way. It’s the style I like to see them play,” Glenbard North coach Joe Larson said. “We like to pressure teams and convert that into turnovers.”

The Bison committed 14 turnovers for the game, 6 during the crucial third quarter, with the Panthers finishing with 6 with the first not coming until the third quarter.

The Panthers’ big third quarter helped stem the tide somewhat of the Bison’s Sam Wacker, who scored a game-high 30 points, 16 in the first half.

He opened the second half with two baskets in the first minute.

Then the Panthers (5-5) heated up and didn’t stop until an 11-of-16 performance from the field at the end of 24 minutes.

Josh Fleming, who led Glenbard North scorers with 20, hit for three 3-point baskets. Robin Paye, Justin Jackson and Chavares Flanigan each hit for 4 points during the quarter.

Glenbard North led 58-36 going into the final period. But the Bison (4-8) weren’t done. Junior Luke Potnick scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth, and Wacker hit for 10.

“Sam had a great tournament. If we shot better from the perimeter, that would help him,” said Buffalo Grove coach Ryan O’Connor.

Three other Panthers scored in double digits. Paye and Ryan Krueger put forth 12 points each. Justin Jackson had 10, Flanigan 9.

“When we play together. We really work well off each other,” Krueger said.

As for Buffalo Grove, O’Connor said his team gained valuable experience.

“The effort is there. We’re going through some growing pains right now, that other teams went through the summer, because of injuries and scheduling. We have not played a lot together,” he said. “We played well in spurts. I thought we played well most of the day.”

The Bison’s Rich Zirngibl pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in addition to his 8 points.
