Harper women’s hoops coach resigns

Mark Smith helped put the Harper College women’s basketball program on the path to success in his three years as head coach.

Now it will be up to someone else to continue the program’s success. Smith resigned as head coach this week so he could spend more time watching his daughter Kelsey play for Michigan State, according to a release from Harper College.

Mark Smith was an assistant coach before taking over the Harper program in 2008-09. The 2009-10 team was 19-10 and reached the Region IV championship game and the 2010-11 team finished 15-13.

Smith was a Daily Herald All-Area player at Elk Grove and was the boys head coach at St. Charles North before coming to Harper.

Kelsey Smith will be a redshirt sophomore at Michigan State. She played in 22 games for the Big Ten champions last season.

Cavin commits: Conant’s Miranda Cavin has made a verbal commitment to Oklahoma State University.

This spring, the junior all-area catcher helped the Cougars to their first Mid-Suburban League crown since 1974.

She led the MSL champs with a .467 batting average, 34 RBI and 4 home runs.

Cavin did not have a single passed ball all season while catching for her all-area sister Briana.

Miranda was 3-of-4 throwing out runners trying to steal and no one tried in an MSL game.

Cavin’s sister, Briana, has already committed to Wisconsin-Green Bay.

“Miranda was a great battery partner for her sister (Briana) again this season,” said Cougars coach CathyAnn Smith. “She knows how to read the batter and call a good game.

“Miranda is very pleased to have committed and they (Oklahoma State) are eager to have her as their starting catcher for the class of 2013.”
