Hampshire silences CL South

Total domination.

Jumping off to an 18-4 lead, Hampshire never trailed in cruising to a 64-39 win over Crystal Lake South in nonconference girls basketball action at South's Gator Alley Thursday night.

“We got off to a good start and had a good performance tonight,” said Hampshire coach Ed Haugens. “We are playing well right now and we have an equal opportunity offense. Anybody on the floor can score. These girls work their tails off in practice every day and are eager to learn.”

The Whip-Purs (21-2), who have the capacity to score inside or outside, connected on 7 of their first 10 shots to lead by 14 with 2:36 left in the first quarter. Senior Alex Dumoulin provided the inside presence with 9 early points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor. Grace Jakubowski, Jessie Van Dorin and Karla Vietinghoff bombed in 3-pointers as Hampshire seized control of the game during the first 8 minutes.

The Whip-Purs, who led 22-6 after 1 quarter, scored the first 6 points of the second quarter to lead 28-6 after a putback by Dumoulin.

Brittany Pittas single-handely tried to keep the Gators in the game. With Pittas scoring all 9 points, the Gators went on a 9-0 run to pull within 13, 28-15, with 4:55 left in the first half.

South couldn't climb any closer.

The Whip-Purs' biggest lead was 29, 57-28, after a layup by Jakubowski with 6:11 left in the game.

Dumoulin, who was 14-of-16 from the floor, scored a career-high 29 points with 13 rebounds.

“My shots are because of my teammates,” said Dumoulin. “They get the ball to me in great position to score. We had great ball movement and got great shots. We are playing with great focus and feel good with the tournament coming up in a couple of weeks.”

Pittas paced the Gators (2-19) with 27 points which included three 3-pointers to go along with 11 rebounds. South's senior forward score of all her team's 15 points in the second quarter.

“Brittany tried to put us on our shoulders,” said South coach Kyle McCaughn. “She played a great game. We gave her a little more help in the second half.”

Megan Hoffman added 6 points with 9 boards for South.

“Hampshire is a very good team and Dumoulin is a very good player,” said McCaughn. “She is the total package. Hampshire can beat you with dribble penetration and with the 3.

“The girls are still coming to practice and working hard. It is a testament to the girls that they want to get better.”
