St. Viator can’t pass Marist

A rough third quarter put St. Viator in catchup mode in Friday night’s East Suburban Catholic Conference game with visiting Marist.

The Lions were able to pull even but they never could get ahead as they fell 63-61 to Marist (12-6, 1-3) at Cahill Gym in Arlington Heights.

“We did not play real good defense that (third) quarter,” said Viator coach Joe Majkowski after his team was outscored 23-10 to fall behind 48-38. “They’re super-quick and I thought we did a pretty good job in the first half.

“They hit some tough shots and tough 3s but I feel we always should be able to defend that.”

The Lions (9-4, 2-1) were able to tie it at 54-54 as Kevin Walsh (19 points) hit three straight 3s. But they came up empty on a last-second chance to pull out the win or force overtime.

D.J. Morris scored 11 points and hit three 3s for Viator and Chris Myjak and Cameron Korab added 9 points apiece. The Lions have an ESCC game at Joliet Catholic at 7:30 p.m. today.

Glenbrook North 56, Maine West 36: Maine West (9-5, 3-1) dropped the matchup for first place in the Central Suburban North at Glenbrook North (12-1, 4-0).

Leyden 58, Willowbrook 40: Leyden (5-9, 2-2) won for just the second time in eight games in the West Suburban Gold game with visiting Willowbrook (0-13, 0-3).
